October Bliss

You are not the darkness you endured. You are the light that refused to surrender.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  DVAM originally evolved from “ the Day of Unity” in October of 1981. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence intended to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to a range of activities conducted at local, state, and national levels. The activities varied from place to place, but all had a common theme. The intent was to mourn those who had died, celebrate those who had survived, and connect all who wanted domestic violence to end. The Silent Witness Project is often observed during DVAM with painted red, life sized figures with shields that tell the story of individual women and others who have died the previous year from domestic violence. By 1989, Congress had passed a law that October would be Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You can read about the history here, along with more information and resources surrounding this important issue.
