Autumn in the Air

While our culture, traditions and religion may differ, we pride ourselves on working hard, educating ourselves as much as possible, striving for better lives for our children, loving our often large and blended families, and sharing as much of our history and customs as we can with anyone who chooses to really see us. We are not so different after all. People simply need to see us for who we are and not who they expect us to be.

Happy Wednesday! We are really excited to have Wyatt our new intern with us! He is helping with all the things including the blog! He has done a piece for Hispanic Heritage Month and has a recipe, too!

Hey all!

It’s Hispanic Heritage Month! Throughout our nation’s history, Latinos have been an important part of our agricultural community. The most recent Census of Agriculture report shows a 14% increase of Latino origin farm operators; including owners, managers, tenants, renters, or sharecroppers.   A great example of Latino contributions to US agriculture is Representative Eligio “Kika” de la Garza. Read this fascinating article about his wonderful contributions.. During his tenure as Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture ( 1981-1994), Representative de la Garza was a supporter of trade and promoted rural economic development. He also led the way for the House to pass Federal reforms on pesticide laws, an overhaul of the agricultural lending system, crop insurance reform, and a major reorganization of the USDA. De la Garza also passed three farm bills and measures that improved human nutrition. He was also one of five Hispanic members of Congress who envisioned and organized Congressional Hispanic Caucus in 1976. Here is their history and mission statement.

In the next few weeks we are welcoming new vendors and returning vendors back from hiatus! Come on out to give them a warm welcome!

Loy is bringing sweet potatoes, peaches, plums, watermelon, tomatoes, onions, muscadines and scuppernongs, mangoes, and peppers. He likes to surprise us with a few extras, too, so be sure to come on out and see what he has! Ms. Eva is bringing her boiled peanuts, dried herbs and spices, and some other surprises.

Don’t forget your jams, jellies, and breads; cakes and cookies! Rosa Ray’s, Ms. Shirley, Marie’s Baked Goodies, and Bon Bon Bakery all have a wonderful selection of baked goods!

We are steadily growing, so if you would like to be a part of our community of vendors, let’s talk! We would love to have you!
